Abubakkar Kyari is the immediate past senator who represented Borno North Senatorial District from 2015 until 2022. He is the present Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He had his early education at Kaduna Capital School in 1974 and his West African Senior School Certificate at Barewa College, Zaria in 1979.
He further pursued a Bachelor’s degree in the University of Tennessee, Martin USA in 1986 and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Webster University,St. Louis, Missouri in 1989.
Abubakkar was born into a family of eight on the 15th of January,1963 in Borno State, Nigeria.
His father was Brigadier Abba Kyari, the ex-millitary administrator for the North Central region from 1967 to 1975.

Kyari ventured into politics on the platform of the United Nigeria Congress Party(UNCP) and was voted into the House of Representatives in 1998.
Thereafter, he was appointed as State Treasurer of Borno State chapter of the All People’s Party(APP) between 1998 and 1999.
In 1999, he was re-elected to the House of Representatives under the platform of the APP and served from 1999 to 2003.
He was Commissioner for Water Resources of Borno state from 2003 to 2005 before taking the position of the Managing Director, Rural Water Agency of Borno State from 2005 to 2007.
From 2007 to 2008, Kyari served as the Commissioner for Education in Borno State and then the commissioner for Water Resources from 2008 to 2010 during Governor Sheriff’s administration.
Following his leadership skills and experiences, he was appointed Commissioner for Home Affairs and Information from 2010 to 2011 and then the commissioner for Works in Borno State. He also functioned as the chief of staff to Borno State government between 2011 and 2014.
In 2015, he won the Borno North Senatorial seat and in 2019, he was re-elected for a second term as senator until his resignation in 2022.
Upon his resignation, he became the acting national chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) after the party’s chairman, Abdullahi Adamu resigned.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the public, Sen. Kyari was conferred with a Nigerian national honor of Commander of the Order of the Niger in October 2022 by President Muhammadu Buhari.
In August 2023, he was appointed as Minister of Agriculture and Food Security by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
