Dr. Mariya Mahmoud is the current Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). She is a medical doctor and former Commissioner for Higher Education, Kano State, Nigeria.

Early Life

Mariya Mahmoud is a native of Bunkure town in Kano State, Nigeria. She was born on 15th January, 1978.

 

Family

She is happily married to a businessman who is also a muslim and she has four children.

 

Education

Mariya Mahmoud’s academic journey started at Bunkure Primary School before she proceeded to Arabic Secondary School, Tudun/ Wadan Dankadai for her Junior Secondary School and then finished at Government Girls Science Secondary School Garko and obtained her West African Senior School Certificate.

After completing  her early and secondary education, she studied at Bayero University, Kano and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Medicine.

She proceeded for her one year compulsory National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC) programme at the National Methodological Center, Plateau State after completing her housemanship in Murtala Specialist Hospital in Kano State.

 

Career

Dr. Mariya Mahmoud was a resident doctor at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital after her national service before she became a Consultant in family Medicine and since then she dedicated many years to serving lives and setting a pace for the younger generations to follow.

Dr. Bunkure has also served the public as a commissioner for higher education in Kano State owing to her appointment in 2019. In this position, Dr Mariya Mahmoud ensured the delivery of good and quality education across the state and also created career opportunities for the youths.

She is a member of several women’s organisations and has spoken out on the importance of education for girls and women. She is an ardent advocate for gender equality especially among women and young girls.

She is also a member of the National Postgraduate Medical College and the West African College of Physicians.

Dr Mariya Mahmoud has served as a Consultant in family medicine, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and Commissioner for higher education, Kano State. Positions which she earned courtesy of her passion and dedication to her work.

 

In August 2023, she was given a ministerial appointment as the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
