Justice Haruna Tsammani is a famous Nigerian legal practitioner, he is known for his dedication and commitment to the Nigerian Judiciary system.

He is the leader of the Justices of the supreme Court handling the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

Biography

Justice Haruna Tsammani was born in 1959 in Tafawa Balewa LGA of Bauchi stae but he helds from Gonbe State, Nigeria.

He spent his formative years in Gombe and had his early and secondary education.

He had his undergraduate studies at Bayero University, Kano where he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1982.

He further earned a Master of Laws degree from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.

Career

Justice Tsammani began his legal expertise in 1983 as a Pupil State Counsel in the Bauchi State Ministry of Justice before working in the Ministry of Justice in Gombe State, where he served as Director of Public Prosecutions. In 1999, he was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Gombe State.

He was appointed Justice of the Court of Appeal in 2011, a position he held until his appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2016.

He has presided over various high profile cases as a judge and has been known for his equity and fairnesss. He also presided over the VAT case between the Rivers State Government and the federal government.

Justice Tsammani prepared the lead judgment that dismissed Abiola Ajimobi’s petition challenging the judgment of the 2019 Election Petition Tribunal which held on November 19, in the same year, upheld PDP’s Kola Balogun as the winner of the senatorial election for Oyo South held on February that year.

On July 4, 2020, he passed one of the judgments of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that affirmed the second term election of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. He also gave the lead judgment of the court that handed back the control of APC in Kano State to the outgoing governor, Abdullahi Gaduje, in February last year.

In October 2021, he led the three-member panel of the court that dismissed the suit by the suspended National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, to allow the party to hold a hitch-free national convention.

He also led the panel of the court that gave the October 2022 judgment suspending the release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, from custody after the charges against the secessionist were dismissed in an earlier judgment of the court.

He is currently leading the team of Judges of the supreme Court presiding over the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

Family
