They are set to commit back to the sport their experience and exposure towards ensuring football improves from the shambolic state it presently is.
ENigeria Newspaper reports that genuine stakeholders have been requesting for round pegs to be placed on round holes. They have been demanding for the ex-internationals who distinguished themselves in their active days to return and help in the administration and management of the sport.
Perhaps those running the sport and those in positions of authority seem to have harkened to this call by gradually appointing these ex-players to anchor key positions at the state and national levels.
But most importantly, these appointments have favoured the former captains of the Super Eagles.
First, it was Nwankwo Kanu who was appointed Chairman of Enyimba Int’l FC of Aba.
Then Daniel Amokachi was equally appointed a member of the Nigerian Premier League board.
Next is John Obi Mikel who has been appointed Special Adviser to Gov. Caleb Mutiwang of Plateau State.
We hear that despite the call by football stakeholders in Rivers State for Gov. Siminalayi Fubara to appoint former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Bishop Peterside Idah as Rivers United Chairman, it is speculated that Joseph Yobo a former skipper of the Super Eagles is being positioned by a power broker in the state to get the job.
Recall that Kanu handed over the Eagles’ skipper’s armband to Yobo when the former Inter Milan, Arsenal and Portsmouth forward called it quits from international football.
Who’s next? Sunday Oliseh? Vincent Enyeama? Who? Recall before the ministerial nominees list was transmitted to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu, Austin Okocha another Super Eagles former captain who handed the armband to Kanu was speculated to be on the list.
It is still being rumoured that Okocha’s name may be on the second batch of ministerial nominees.
A section of the media even reported that he is penciled down for Minister of Sports while another report said, he may get the position of Minister for State.
