A 45-year-old teacher, Stella Nwadigo, has been remanded by the Ogba Chief Magistrate Court for assaulting a three-year-old pupil at Christ-Mitos Primary School in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The incident was captured in a viral video, which showed Nwadigo slapping the toddler repeatedly for not learning to write numbers quickly.
The police prosecutor, Supol Akeem Raji, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on January 7, 2025, at about 11 am. The charges against Nwadigo include indecent treatment and assault of a child, which contravene Sections 135 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
Nwadigo pleaded not guilty to the charges, and Magistrate Olabisi Kusanu granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties. The case has been adjourned until February 18, 2025.
The Lagos State Police Command has assured that the pupil has been taken to a medical facility for a proper check-up. The command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, commended Nigerians for promptly reporting the incident and assured them of the command’s readiness to respond to situations ensuring the safety and security of Lagos residents and visitors.
