In the NLC Protest Update obtained by ENigeria Newspaper, there is tension in Abuja as protesters vandalized the National Assembly gate.

ENigeria Newspaper obtained eyewitness accounts stating that protestors broke down the first gate of the National Assembly (NASS) complex and forced their way inside marching to the Assembly Complex’s second gate while Senators immediately entered a closed-door session.

The Organised Labour including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliate unions, today, kicked off a protest in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and other states of the Federation including Lagos, Abia, Plateau, Kaduna, Kano, Rivers, Zamfara, Katsina, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Kwara, Ogun, Imo, Ondo, and Edo.

The protesters in their hundreds convened at the Unity Fountain from where they marched to the NASS Complex.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio is expected to address the protesters ahead of today’s screening of ministerial nominees.
You would recall that the Inspector General of Police in a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi on Tuesday afternoon issued a strong warning to members of an organized Labour Unions that there is no room for violent protest.

While being mindful of the right to peaceful protest, as enshrined in our Constitution, IGP Egbetokun in the statement made available to ENigeria Newspaper urged all parties involved to ensure that the planned demonstrations are conducted in a peaceful manner to prevent being hijacked by miscreants, owing to the previous ugly experiences of such protests in most major cosmopolitan cities in the country.

The IGP, however, acknowledges the grievances raised by the Labour unions and the importance of constructive dialogue, which is a sine qua none, in addressing these issues.

In light of this, IGP Kayode Egbetokun orders the Commissioners of Police in charge of various commands, and supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to engage in fruitful discussions with the NLC/TUC leadership to foster understanding and reach common grounds on the planned protests.
