Senator Annie Okonkwo according to reports available to ENigeria Newspaper, died on Wednesday afternoon. His death came prior to the inauguration of his son Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, who is the House of Representatives Member-elect for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Anambra State.
Clement Annie Okonkwo KSJ who holds the popular title of Agunaechemba was elected Senator under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and represented the Anambra Central District in the Sixth Assembly from 2007-2011.
Born Clement Annie Okonkwo on 23 May 1960 in Ojoto, near Onitsha in Anambra State. He obtained an Advanced Diploma in Management, from Harvard University, United States of America (1997-1998). He further obtained Advanced Diploma in Commercial Law and Practice, University of Lagos (1995-1997) and Advanced Diploma in Marketing, University of Lagos (1994 – 1995).
He was elected Senator for the Anambra Central constituency of Anambra State, Nigeria, taking office on 29 May 2007. He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
He ventured into business and built a conglomerate, employing over 7,000 people. Some of his multi-million businesses include firms like, Reliance Telecomm, Clemco Industries, Modern Communications (satellite TV Network), MacClemm Marketing Communications, Sunflower Nigeria and Pentagon Oil.
The renowned politician is happily married to Lady Chinyere Okonkwo, chairman of the defunct Zoom Mobile and Clemco Group. Together they celebrated their birthday in a grand style in the city of Dubai, one of the destinations for tourism in the world.
Over the years, the couple has a tradition of celebrating their birthdays together and this is especially so because of the coincidence in their birth dates. For instance, Okonkwo was on May 22 while his wife was born on May 25, just three days interval; and for decades, the proudly Ojoto billionaire has been celebrating his birthday with his adorable wife in a similar way.

After taking his seat in the Senate, he was appointed to committees on Upstream Petroleum Resources, Police Affairs, Environment (Vice-chairman), and Agriculture. In a mid-term evaluation of Senators in May 2009, ThisDay reported that he sponsored a bill for the Federal Government to make essential commodities accessible and affordable to Nigerians and a bill to establish the Nigerians Citizens in Diaspora Commission. He was a contender in the February 2010 elections for Anambra State Governor. However, he lost to the incumbent, Peter Obi, who was reelected.
One of the things he did that the people of Anambra would not forget so soon was to ensure that the Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology undertook a visit to Anambra State following the erosion and environmental degradation that the state experienced.

To ensure the improvement of electricity, in 2009, Okonkwo distributed 15 units of transformers to communities in the Anambra Central zone. Enekwesumpu area, in Nkpor; Electrical Market, Obosi; Odume Layout, Obosi; Eke Awka market; Motor Spare parts area, Nkpor; Oba; Nnobi; Nibo; and Awka are some of the communities that received transformers from Okonkwo.
Okonkwo attracted several other constituency projects, such as a modern library/ internet centre at Okpuno, Awka, a modern library centre at Nkpor, construction, and renovation of 15 primary schools across the senatorial zone, construction of classroom blocks and water boreholes in Ojoto Girls Secondary School, supply of hospital equipment and pharmaceuticals to Ojoto Medical Centre, the PHCN power distribution sub-station in Ojoto, renovation of a school in the seven local government areas.
Agunechemba is said to have a large heart and human sense.
His son Uchenna-Harris Okonkwo the 32-year-old Labour Party candidate defeated other candidates which include Obinna Chidoka (Osita Chidoka’s brother) and Ikenna Iyiegbu (Obi Cubana’s brother).
