A horrific road accident occurred in Lokoja, the capital city of Kogi State, on Thursday, resulting in the loss of six lives and injuring 60 others. The incident took place around 3 pm near the Zone 8 Roundabout along the Hassan Katsina Road.
According to eyewitnesses, an articulated truck traveling from Bauchi to Enugu State lost control, causing the devastating crash. The truck’s failure to brake in time resulted in a catastrophic collision that left many people trapped and injured.
The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Samuel Oyedeji, confirmed the incident and reported that the remains of the six deceased were deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital mortuary.
A resident who witnessed the accident described the scene as “horrific,” with people trapped and emergency responders working tirelessly to clear the scene. “It was a chaotic sight. People were trapped, and it took hours to clear the scene,” the resident said.
This tragic incident is not the first of its kind in Kogi State. people lost their lives, and two were injured in an auto crash in the state.
Oyedeji urged drivers to exercise caution, especially when operating heavy-duty vehicles, and called on the government to intensify efforts in addressing road infrastructure challenges and enforcing traffic regulations.
“As investigations continue into the cause of the accident, Nigerians are once again reminded of the shared responsibility to ensure safer roads for all,” Oyedeji added.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to be vigilant and cautious on the roads.
