28 persons were killed in a gunman attack on the Angwan Rukuba hamlet in Jos North Local Government Area, according to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who called the tragedy “tragic and senseless.”
The governor stated in a Tuesday countrywide broadcast, monited by ENigeria Newspaper, that the attack happened on Sunday night when locals were going about their daily lives.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sorrow that I address you today. This unfortunate event led to the loss of 28 innocent lives and left many others injured,” Mutfwang said.
Jos North was placed under a 48-hour curfew by the state government from midnight on March 29 to April 1 in order to control the situation and give security personnel time to reestablish order.
The governor revealed that he had met with victims seeking care at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and visited the impacted region with security chiefs to evaluate the damage.
He claims that the majority of the injured are in stable condition and that the state government will pay for their medical expenses as well as assist the families of the deceased by arranging for respectable funerals.
“We are committed to ensuring that all those involved in this heinous act are swiftly brought to justice,” he added.
Mutfwang further disclosed that security services have been instructed to find additional offenders, and a suspect who has previously threatened the state’s peace has been taken into custody.
Recall that ENigeria Newspaper reported that, noting its connection to criminal activity, Mutfwang has issued an order for the strict enforcement of the current restriction on commercial motorbikes within the Jos Greater Master Plan region as part of additional security measures.
In order to review and improve the state’s security architecture, he also declared that a meeting of the State Security Council had been called.
While commending residents for their calm response, the governor urged continued vigilance.
He emphasized that preserving security is a shared duty and urged citizens to report suspicious movements. Mutfwang stated that Plateau State would not submit to intimidation or fear, reiterating his administration’s commitment to safeguarding people and property.
