Prof. Tahir Mamman is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria(SAN) and a politician who is currently serving as the Minister of Education for the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is an academic Scholar, a one time Vice Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja and the former Director of the Nigerian Law School.

Early Life

Tahir Mamman was born on 7th July 1954 and a native of Michika, Adamawa State, Nigeria.

 

Education

He has a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1983, a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Warwick, Warwickshire England and his Ph.D from the same University. He was called to bar after attending the Nigerian Law School in Lagos in 1984.

 

Family

Tahir Mamman is a Muslim who is married with children but details of his wife and children are kept out of public view.

 

Career

Mamman started working as a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Maiduguri and in 1991. He was later  made the head of department of Common Law, a position he held till 1997.

During his lecturing career, he served as a member of the national universities commission (NUC) and was subsequently elevated to the position of the Dean of students affairs between 1997 and 2000.

He was also a member of Local Government Election Tribunal in Adamawa State.

He has been an external examiner at the Ahmadu Bello University from 2001 to 2002 and patron for Youth Federation of Nigeria and Nigeria Youth Organization of University of  Maiduguri.

In 2001, he was appointed deputy director of Nigeria Law School Kano campus Director and then the Director General.

 

Politics

Mamman joined politics after his service as Director General of the Nigerian Law School in 2014 and contested as governor of Adamawa state on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) but lost.

He was a member of the APC national executive committee representing northeast geopolitical zone and acting national vice chairman of north east in the APC National Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC).

Throughout his professional career, he served as members of several organizations some of which are;

The Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Association of Law Teachers, Common Wealth Legal Education Association, National Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigeria, African Network of Constituted Lawyers, International Bar Association, Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria(BOSAN) amongst others.

Between 2011 and 2013, he was also a member of the governing board of International Association of Law School, Washington DC.

 

Awards and titles

In recognition of his contributions towards the development of the academic and legal system of Nigeria, he was appointed as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) was conferred on him.

He also holds traditional titles of Dan Ruwata of Adamawa Emirate and Dokajin Mubi of Adamawa .

He was recently appointed as the Minister of Education for the Federal Republic of Nigeria by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
