The Enugu State government-owned Enugu Air is set to kick off operations any moment from now.
ENigeria News reports that Enugu Air, when launched, will be the second state-owned airline in Nigeria after Ibom Air.
You would recall that in October 2023, the Enugu State government declared intentions to launch Enugu Air, which it said would be commissioned within the next 15 months.
The declaration was made by the State Commissioner of Transportation, Obi Ozor, during a meeting with the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Aviacargo committee in the state airport.
ENigeria News reports that Obi Ozor disclosed that with a growing population of over five million people, Enugu state Governor Peter Mbah is committed to the transformation of the state into a commercial hub within Nigeria.
Ozor, who is also the CEO of Kobo360, a logistics startup in Nigeria, said that Enugu Air is envisioned to operate as a multi-faceted transportation system, encompassing both passenger and cargo services.
“We want to establish an airline, Enugu Air, which will handle both passenger and cargo operations, especially on the cargo side, to be able to use that as a channel to encourage the export of valuable agro-products.
“We are also building inland terminals for the export of further agricultural commodities and mining products to serve the Southeast and North Central,” Ozor’s statement said.
Meanwhile, further exclusive findings by this newspaper indicate that finalization on the new airline operations, which is nearing completion, will be operated in collaboration with Xejet Airline and is positioned to create massive employment opportunities for residents and indigenes of Enugu State, especially those in the aviation sector.
ENigeria News understands that for many residents and travelers, the new airline is a welcome development, as it promises to provide regular flight operations in and out of Enugu, making air travel more reliable and accessible. Beyond improved connectivity, the project is also expected to create new career paths within the evolving aviation industry in Nigeria.
