NALPGAM, Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, an LPG marketers’ association, has said that rising gas prices across Nigeria currently can be atributed to limited supply locally as well as threats from the international energy market.
ENigeria Newspaper learnt this when Edu Inyang, the NALPGAM president, explained that domestic supply has been hampered especially from the Dangote Refinery, thus making it difficult for marketers to access LPG, hence affecting the gas prices across the country.
“Securing the product has become more challenging, and allocations are no longer as frequent as before,” he said.
“Some off-takers have gone for extended periods without supply, while those with access are responding to prevailing demand conditions.”
He went on to state that Nigeria LNG Ltd had been sending in LPG at a higher cost which was also raising depot prices. Inyang noted that changing international energy markets are impacting domestic prices.
“Nigeria is not insulated from global energy shocks,” he said. “Fluctuations in international prices inevitably affect local LPG costs.”
According to Inyang, private depot operators are constrained by landing and operating fees that are passed on to customers, restricting sales below cost.
Even while there are currently pricing pressures, more investment in gas infrastructure could eventually help stabilize supply and price, according to Inyang. To increase domestic production, he promoted the construction of more gas processing facilities and increased involvement from the private sector.
“Similar cycles have occurred before. With adequate investment and expansion of existing and upcoming gas projects, supply will improve, and prices are likely to stabilize” he noted.
Due to rising worldwide oil benchmarks, gas prices in Nigeria have skyrocketed as of early April 2026, with pump prices topping ₦1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja. While natural gas rates for industrial customers increased to $2.18/MMBtu, cooking gas (LPG) prices have also skyrocketed, with 12.5 kilogram cylinders costing over ₦10,000.
