Borno State has again been identified as the centre of terrorist activity in Nigeria, with fresh data and recent incidents highlighting the persistence of insurgent attacks in the region.
Concerns that the state continues to be the center of violence in the country’s northeast are reinforced by findings from the Global Terrorism Index, which show a pattern of high-casualty attacks focused in Borno.
The most recent evaluation highlights the ongoing threat presented by insurgent organizations, even though the most recent bomb blast incident did not make it into the global terror ranking.
According to the report, one of the deadliest incidents in Nigeria occurred in Darajamal village in Bama Local Government Area.
“The gunmen attacked the village of Darajamal, Bama Local Government Area, Borno State, on September 5, killing 58 villagers and five soldiers. Thirty of the gunmen were reportedly killed by the Nigerian Army after the attack. No organisation has claimed responsibility for the assault at the time of writing, although local media sources have attributed the attack to the Islamic State West Africa Province,” the report stated.
Another major attack was recorded in Kukawa Local Government Area, further highlighting the scale of violence in the state.
“Jihadists attacked the neighbouring villages of Mallam Karamti and Kwatandashi in Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State, on May 15. According to local press reports, approximately 100 civilians were rounded up and taken into the forest, with 57 bodies later recovered and 70 individuals still missing. Media reports attribute the attack to Boko Haram’s JAS faction,” the report said.
The pattern of attacks has persisted, with recent incidents continuing to raise alarm over security in the region.
Last Monday, one of the biggest recent attacks on the capital of Borno state has occurred in Maiduguri, where a succession of suspected suicide bombings have left at least 23 people dead and 108 injured.
At around 19:30 local time, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, a popular weekly market, and a post office were all struck within minutes of one another, according to authorities in the northeastern state. The attack was attributed by Nigeria’s military to militants from the infamous Boko Haram group.
Recall that all reports showed that Maiduguri was the birthplace of Boko Haram, and the city served as the focal point of the Islamist group’s 2009 insurgency.
However, after increased military operations drove armed groups into isolated border regions, the state capital had been enjoying a period of relative stability.
However, recent incidences showed that Nigeria and Borno recorded a significant increase in terrorism-related deaths in 2025, placing it among the countries most affected globally.
