El-Rufai stuck in legal limbo amid ongoing court delays

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai remains caught in a legal stalemate as his efforts to challenge detention measures face prolonged delays in the courts.

ENigeria Newspaper recall that yesterday, the Federal High Court originally hearing his fundamental rights enforcement suit was unable to proceed because Justice Belgore went on leave, prompting the transfer of the case for reassignment, leaving el-Rufai in legal limbo.

Judicial observers told ENigeria Newspaper that the delays stem from procedural adjustments and administrative reassignments within the judiciary, leaving the former governor in a state of uncertainty. Lawyers for el-Rufai are preparing fresh filings to expedite hearings once the case is allocated to a new judge, but until that happens, there is little movement in the proceedings.

The delays also mean el-Rufai cannot fully respond to ongoing investigations and enforcement actions, keeping his legal situation unresolved.

As the case awaits reassignment, el-Rufai’s position remains precarious, caught between multiple judicial processes and ongoing scrutiny from authorities. This situation, observers say, highlights the slow pace of resolution in high-profile legal disputes.

Prior to this development, el-Rufai had been taken into custody on February 16, 2026, following an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He was later transferred to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), while a separate case filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) stalled due to his unavailability in court.
