Stakeholders from Makoko, Sogunro and Oko Agbon communities have agreed with the Lagos State Government to establish a 10-member committee to carry out a self-enumeration of buildings affected by recent demolitions in the area.
ENigeria Newspaper reports that the committee is expected to conclude its assignment within two weeks and forward its report to the Lagos State House of Assembly Ad Hoc Committee on Rules and Business. As part of the resolution reached, residents were advised not to rebuild any demolished structures pending further directives.
The decision followed a stakeholders’ meeting held Tuesday at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, where community representatives and government officials reached a five-point agreement aimed at addressing tensions arising from the exercise.
Chairman of the committee and Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams, urged all parties to adhere strictly to the resolutions. He emphasised that the community-led enumeration would be cross-checked with official government data to ensure transparency and accuracy. Adams also directed the communities to formally submit the names of the 10 committee members once constituted.
ENigeria Newspaper also gathered that among other resolutions, the state government pledged to pursue the regeneration of Makoko without displacing residents. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Geographic Information Service, Dr Olajide Babatunde, also undertook to provide an auto-photo detailing the demolition boundaries within one month.
Babatunde disclosed that plans for the proposed Water City project had been finalised, describing it as part of broader efforts to improve living conditions in the area.
He conveyed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s concerns about overcrowding and poor sanitation, assuring residents that those affected by the demolitions would receive compensation.
Community leaders, including the Baale of Sogunro, Chief Abraham Mesu, and the Baale of Makoko Waterfront, Chief Emmanuel Shemade, acknowledged the disruption caused by the demolitions but expressed readiness to cooperate with the government.
The Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Bayo Adefuye, commended the Assembly’s intervention, saying the Water City initiative would enhance infrastructure and ensure that residents remain central beneficiaries of the redevelopment plan.
