Victor Osimhen was born in the dumpsite of Olusosun, a slum around the Oregun Area of Lagos.
ENigeria News reports that like several other celebrities who weren’t born with silver spoons, Osimhen struggled through life. He was favored with football talent.
The talent propelled him through hard work to gain recognition into the Golden Eaglets squad of 2015 under coach Emmanuel Amunike….and the rest as they say is history.
Today, the footballer who has moved from Wolfsburg in Germany to Charleroi in Belgium to Lille in France and presently Napoli in Italy is the King of African football. What a feat.
He is the fifth Nigerian to win this prestigious award after Late Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, Nwankwo Kanu who won it twice, and Victor Ikpeba.
This is an individual award but it carries a national appeal and honour. It distinguishes not just the winner but his country of birth to give this unique feeling and sense of achievement. It certainly spurs teenagers within the country to reach for the sky in their chosen careers.
Congratulations Osimhen. You were voted 8th best in the world courtesy of Ballon d’Or 2023…but here you are confirming that the award wasn’t a fluke. More to come.
