A commercial minibus overturned and burst into flames along the Ballet inward Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos yesterday, leaving two passengers dead and eight others injured.
ENigeria Newspaper said the accident occurred around 5 p.m. when an unknown private vehicle reversed onto the main carriageway, forcing the speeding minibus (Faka SMK 823 YK) to brake abruptly. The sudden manoeuvre caused the vehicle to lose control, roll multiple times, and ignite.
LASTMA officials revealed that the bus was carrying a five-litre petrol container, which fueled the fire accident. The driver and a female passenger seated at the front were burnt beyond recognition.
ENigeria Newspaper also reports that eight other passengers were rescued by Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) operatives and a public-spirited motorist before being rushed to a nearby hospital.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA General Manager, commended the rapid response of his team, noting that prompt intervention prevented further casualties. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, along with LASAMBUS, helped extinguish the blaze and manage emergency operations.
Police officers from the Ilasa Division secured the scene, controlling traffic and ensuring safety.
The accident caused significant gridlock along the busy Oshodi-Apapa corridor.
