This year’s National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, convocation will enable 56 prisoners in correctional facilities throughout Nigeria regain hope in addition to gaining degrees.

The prisoners will graduate alongside 24,575 students during the university’s 15th convocation on April 18, demonstrating what it calls its dedication to inclusive and accessible education.

Vice-Chancellor Uduma Uduma stated that their involvement is a significant indication of the university’s wide reach during a pre-convocation briefing in Abuja.

“The inmates are among the 24,575 students graduating at the ceremony, reflecting the university’s broad reach and inclusive approach to learning, which ensures that education remains accessible to diverse groups across Nigeria,” he said.

ENigeria Newspaper gathered that NOUN has expanded education into penal facilities through its open and distant learning concept, giving inmates who might otherwise be excluded because of their circumstances opportunities. The vice-chancellor claims that this embodies the institution’s core conviction that “no human being is beyond redemption.”

“The initiative demonstrates how education can serve as a tool for rehabilitation and reintegration, offering inmates a pathway to rebuild their lives after incarceration,” he said.

“For us, it is not just about awarding certificates; it is about restoring dignity, rebuilding identity, and reaffirming humanity,” he added.

Uduma added that the program’s convicts’ achievements demonstrate the wider influence of education.

“The success of inmates in the programme underscores the transformative power of knowledge and the need for sustained investment in inclusive education,” he stated.

He described the institution as “a silent revolution” in Nigeria’s educational system and stated that NOUN continues to break down barriers by reaching a variety of groups, including as women, working-class people, and other non-traditional learners.

“The prison education initiative is part of a long-term vision to position NOUN as a leading institution in inclusive and flexible learning in Africa.”

All graduating students, regardless of location, are expected to attend the convocation, and certificates will be given out right away.
