Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review the scheduled date for the 2027 general elections, warning that conducting the exercise during Ramadan could dampen voter participation.

ENigeria Newspaper had earlier reported that INEC had announced February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, with governorship and state assembly polls slated for March 6, 2027.

The commission also fixed May 22 to June 20, 2026, for party primaries.

Reacting on Friday via his verified X account, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party noted that the proposed February 20 date falls within the Ramadan fasting period, projected to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027.

According to him, elections demand extensive participation, physical stamina and nationwide focus —factors he believes could be affected by the observance of a major religious obligation.

He described the timing as insensitive in a plural society like Nigeria, stressing that inclusive planning is essential in safeguarding democratic credibility.

Atiku further questioned the commission’s preparedness, arguing that proper scheduling is a basic administrative responsibility.

He maintained that Nigerians deserve assurances of competence and fairness as the country prepares for the 2027 polls.
