Siminalayi Fubara has dissolved the Rivers State executive council, directing all commissioners and special advisers to immediately hand over to permanent secretaries or the most senior officials in their ministries.
The announcement was made Thursday night in a statement by his chief press secretary and made available to ENigeria Newspaper, as the governor thanked the outgoing cabinet members for their service and wished them well.
ENigeria Newspaper reports that the sweeping decision comes just days after Bola Tinubu intervened in the protracted political crisis in Rivers State, brokering a truce between the governor and the state house of assembly following months of tension, impeachment threats and factional division within the legislature.
Most members of the assembly are aligned with Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory and predecessor to Fubara.
Recall that ENigeria Newspaper reported that Wike had publicly opposed Fubara’s re-election bid, accusing him of violating an earlier peace agreement reached before the lifting of emergency rule in the state.
Earlier this week, Wike disclosed that the president had again stepped into the dispute, expressing optimism that the rift between the executive and legislature would be permanently resolved.
Reports in January , according to ENigeria Newspaper, indicated that part of the reconciliation terms proposed by Wike included the reinstatement of Sergeant Awuse as chairman of the state’s traditional rulers’ council — a position from which he was removed in June 2024 and replaced with Chike Worlu Wodo.
Wike was also said to have demanded the appointment of new commissioners.
