The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says that 3,441,121 people have registered to vote in the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. More than two-thirds of these new voters are between the ages of 18 and 34.
ENigeria Newspaper gathered this from the commission’s week 13 update, which came out on April 8 in Abuja, said that 2,354,768 young Nigerians had registered, which was 68.43 percent of the total. This shows that a lot of young people are registering ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As of April 3, the data includes both online pre-registrations and people who went to specific centers around the country to register in person. Of the total, 2,068,384 people signed up online, and 1,372,737 people signed up in person at INEC offices.
State-level figures showed Jigawa leading with 201,047 registrants (5.84%), followed by Lagos with 181,095, and Kano with 177,681. Other states also showed robust participation across the country.
Gender distribution revealed that females accounted for 1,922,143 registrations (55.86%), while males registered 1,518,978 (44.14%).
The breakdown by occupation indicated that students formed the largest group with 1,235,931 registrations (35.92%), followed by those engaged in business activities (701,912; 20.40%), and farming/fishing (615,967; 18.28%). The data also showed 48,330 persons with disabilities (PWDs) completed registration during this phase.
INEC emphasised that the 3.4 million figure remains preliminary, pending a data clean-up period for claims and objections, followed by verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
The commission also noted that voter registration remains suspended in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in line with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022, following the Area Council elections held on February 21. Eligible Nigerians who are yet to register were encouraged to visit INEC’s official platforms to complete the process.
