Facts have now emerged on how Tony Elumelu-led United Bank for Africa (UBA), and other top Nigerian banking institutions were allegedly harnessed as a conduit pipe by alleged terrorism financiers in Nigeria.

ENigeria Newspaper reports that the Federal government, following recommendations by the Nigeria Sanctions Committee (NSC), which investigated a list of account numbers domiciled in Access bank, First Bank, UBA among others, upon conclusion of a high-level meeting in Abuja in 2025, advised that the accounts which had links to terrorism financing in Nigeria should be sanctioned, and the account holders prosecuted.

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) is convinced that the action is in line with Section 54 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, which empowers the government to impose sanctions on individuals and organizations linked to terror-related activities.

The NFIU further disclosed that the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), acting on the approval of President Bola Tinubu, authorized the designation of the individuals and entities, leading to their official inclusion in the Nigeria Sanctions List.

ENigeria Newspaper understands that as part of the enforcement measures, authorities were directed to identify and freeze all funds, assets, and other economic resources linked to the sanctioned individuals and organizations without prior notice.

Below are UBA account numbers, other bank accounts Used for Terrorism Financing in Nigeria:

ENigeria Newspaper obtained a list of account numbers cutting across various banking institutions in Nigeria, all of which funneled huge funds for alleged terrorism financing in Nigeria.

SEC Orders Asset Freezing Of 13 People, Groups Linked To Terrorism Funding

In an updated list of individuals and groups allegedly linked to terrorism financing in Nigeria, obtained by ENigeria Newspaper in 2026, the Federal Government has moved to freeze the assets and bank accounts of more than 13 persons.

Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has consequently directed capital market operators to immediately identify and freeze all assets connected to the affected entities.

The directive follows the inclusion of 10 individuals and three organizations on the Nigeria Sanctions List by the Nigeria Sanctions Committee, triggering urgent regulatory action across the country’s financial system.

In a notice titled “Commission’s Sweeping Compliance Directive to Capital Market Operators,” the SEC stated that the action is in line with the provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, which mandates the immediate freezing of all funds and economic resources linked to designated persons and entities  without prior notice.

The Commission further confirmed that all Capital Market Operators (CMOs) and relevant stakeholders have been formally notified and are required to comply with the directive without delay.
