Former presidential candidate and NNPP National Leader, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, returned to Nigeria on Sunday amid looming US sanctions over alleged religious freedom violations, raising questions about his immediate political and legal outlook.

Kwankwaso arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after what the New Nigeria People’s Party described as “strategic international engagements” in India, where he reportedly met with educational institutions and received an award.

He was received by NNPP National Chairman Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo, Senator Rufai Hanga of Kano Central, and other party chieftains.

In a viral video shared on social media ans sighted by ENigeria Newspaper, Kwankwaso was seen passing through airport security in a white Babariga paired with his signature Kwankwasiyya cap.

The NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, confirmed the clip and clarified the purpose of the trip. “He went to India because of a meeting with educational institutions, where he was also given an award. That was where he was before all these false narratives broke out,” Johnson said.

Kwankwaso’s return comes just four days after the introduction of the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 (HR 7457) in the United States Congress, which recommends targeted sanctions, including visa bans and asset freezes, under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, as reported by ENigeria Newspaper. The legislation, sponsored by Riley Moore (R-West Virginia) and co-sponsored by Chris Smith (R-New Jersey), lists Kwankwaso alongside Fulani-ethnic nomad militias, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore for alleged involvement in religious freedom abuses.

Recall that ENigeria Newspaper confirmed that the NNPP has defended Kwankwaso, describing the narratives linking him to abuses as false, but the former governor has not yet issued a personal response regarding the proposed sanctions.

Observers note that Kwankwaso’s political future and movement abroad may now face increased scrutiny, as the implications of HR 7457 could affect both his international travel and financial dealings.

The development places Kwankwaso at a crossroads, with the party maintaining support while awaiting further actions from the US and potential reactions from Nigerian authorities.
