The Federal Government has issued a firm directive to all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to strictly adhere to the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) as part of efforts to boost accountability, fiscal discipline, and the credibility of Nigeria’s budget.

During a meeting in Abuja with the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), SGF George Akume emphasised that public funds must be spent according to national priorities and realistic revenue forecasts.

“Following the MTEF is essential to prevent waste, improve transparency, and ensure resources are allocated where they matter most,” he said.

Akume called on the FRC to strengthen monitoring and enforcement, insisting that timely financial reporting and audit compliance are key to protecting taxpayer money and sustaining macroeconomic stability.

FRC Chairman Victor Muruako praised the government’s commitment under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that regulatory oversight has improved under his five-year tenure.

“We remain focused on enforcing compliance and safeguarding public resources, with full independence and integrity,” he added.

The directive signals a renewed push to make Nigeria’s budgeting process more predictable and accountable, ensuring that government spending aligns with long-term development goals rather than ad hoc allocations.
