Detained Joy Ezeugwu, a nurse at Uwani General Hospital in Enugu State, who posted a video depicting the facility’s declining circumstances and arrested afterwards has been released.
Famous X influencer and education technologist, Alex Onyia, revealed on his X handle on Monday that a squad from the Police Force Headquarters Annex in Enugu is said to have taken Joy into custody but has now been bailed out.
The report claims that Ifeyinwa Peace Okwudu, the administration of her previous school, Ezzy College of Nursing, sent the police officers.
“Joy Ezeugwu has been arrested this morning by a team from Police Force Headquarters Annex, Enugu. They were sent by her former school’s (Ezzy College of Nursing) administrator Ifeyinwa Peace Okwudu.
“Students and staff oppression have now become a norm. We will dismantle it,” Onyia wrote on X.
Background of Joy Ezeugwu arrest
Joy Ezegwu was suspended in April after her widely shared video exposed the facility’s declining circumstances, such as the lack of running water and power.
The video, which went viral on social media, showed medical professionals complaining about the difficult working conditions. The video also showed how employees in the video were clearly complaining that their capacity to provide quality treatment, especially in an emergency, was being hampered by the absence of basic amenities.
In response, Joy Ezeugwu was accused of violating Okwud’s right to privacy by filming an internal staff discussion at her office, and Okwud wanted N10 million in damages, stating that prior to the meeting, all participants were told to put away any cell phones or recording equipment.
According to Okwudu, Joy was particularly asked if she had a device of that kind, and she allegedly denied having one, saying she had left her phone at home.
However, Joy allegedly carried a cell phone in her backpack and secretly recorded conversations during the meeting without permission.
