Rivers State Governor, Similanyi Fubara has spoken up about those behind his impeachment plans, alleging that security agents shot at him directly in an attempt to kill him.
Moments ago, ENigeria News reported that heavy gunshots, teargas upturned the ongoing impeachment process of the governor by Lawmakers believed to be loyal to Nyesome Wike the Minister of FCT.
ENigeria News reports that the impeachment process of Governor Siminalaye Fubara which was cut short convened within the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex and presided upon by Speaker Martin Amaewhule along with 23 other lawmakers present.
The lawmakers also suspended the leader of the House, Edison Ehie, and some of their colleagues believed to be loyal to the Governor.
Preceding the failed impeachment proceeding on Monday morning was an explosion on Sunday night that razed the legislative chambers inside the Assembly complex. Sources told our correspondent that the idea was to frustrate the impeachment proceeding meant to take place this morning, but lawmakers refused to back down.
Following the gunshot and firing of teargas, people ran helter-skelter as policemen chased people, including workers whose offices are located within the area.
An eyewitness told ENigeria News that the lawmakers who could not conclude the business of the day were immediately seen at about 8:15 a.m. driving out of the Assembly with heavy security escorts.
Addressing some of his supporters in the state, Governor Fubara not only accused Security agencies of being compromised but went also said they made an attempt on his life by shooting directly at him.
The governor, who said he had committed no offence to warrant impeachment, asked those after him to come out openly.
He said, “From what I have seen the security agency is even compromised. They were shooting at me directly but it doesn’t matter, somebody will die one day.
“When people here ask who is this Fubara? He is that man that was killed for his struggle. I am not against anybody. I’m not planning anything against anybody that I don’t know where these things are coming from.
“Let it be put on record that whoever masterminded this is trying to shift… I heard some people gathered to do whatever. That is purely rubbish. You can’t sit when there is problem and say you are doing anything. What are you doing? I’m the chief security officer. I’m the head of the government… whatever action that is taken here is null and void. For our good people, I know you are prayerful. You have been praying for me. God will see us to the end.”
Fubara has reportedly fallen out with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
