There’s been an ongoing coup d’état in Benin Republic, a former French colony in West Africa.

While details of the ongoing coup d’état in Benin Republic remains sketchy at the time of this report, a broadcast on the country’s national television, which is reported to be under military control, showed a military officer who identified himself as Lieutenant Colonel Tigri, declaring himself chairman of “the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR).”

Lieutenant Colonel Tigri flanked by other military officers, declared that the military had seized power and Mr. Patrice Talon was removed from his position as President of the Republic.

Meanwhile, the French embassy had earlier revealed on X that “gunfire was reported in Camp Guezo, near the home of the President of the Republic” in Cotonou, and called on French citizens to remain in their homes “as a security measure.”

However, President Talon’s media team is trying to reassure the public that . “It’s a small group of people who only have a television. The regular army is regaining control. The city [Cotonou, the capital] and the country are completely secure, as are the president and his family,” a military source close to the president stated.

As of the time of filing this report, the situation in the Benin Republic remains unclear, but some sources told ENigeria Newspaper that the situation has caused serious panic in the country with many unsure of what is to come next.
