The Senate will reconvene on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 11 a.m., following an abrupt decision to cut short its earlier adjournment from February 24, as lawmakers move to address urgent national matters tied to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The notice, circulated to all senators and sighted by ENigeria Newspaper, was issued by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo. Although the internal memo did not specify the reason for the emergency session, sources within the National Assembly indicate it is connected to deliberations on the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act and the recently released 2027 election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

According to the statement, the Clerk said:

“I am directed by His Excellency, the President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, to inform all Distinguished Senators that the Senate will reconvene plenary session as follows: Date: Tuesday, 17th February 2026; Time: 11 a.m.; Venue: Senate Chamber.

Consequently, all Distinguished Senators are kindly requested to note and reschedule their engagements accordingly to enable attendance, as very crucial decisions will be taken on national issues during the session.”

The reconvening is expected to enable senators to consider matters arising from the amendment bill, particularly in light of a conference committee meeting scheduled for Monday. Lawmakers may also deliberate on possible clashes between the electoral timetable and Ramadan, projected to fall between February 7 and 8, 2027, to ensure that fasting periods do not disrupt scheduled electoral activities.

Tuesday’s sitting highlights the urgency surrounding the Electoral Act Amendment and the coordination of the 2027 election schedule, with senators preparing to take decisions described as crucial to national interest.
