Controversy is brewing as Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike is appointed member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council for the forthcoming Bayelsa State governorship election, ENigeria Newspaper reports.

The inclusion of former Governor Wike in the APC’s campaign council list continues to set tongues wagging as to his allegiance to his party, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

ENigeria Newspaper reports that even as the backdrop of questions raised after the former governor of Rovers State was appointed into the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are yet unattended to, Governor Wike continues to plunge himself into more controversies, especially with his latest appointment.

Meanwhile, the APC Council is chaired by the Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya. Others who will co-chair include the Minister of Defense, Badaru Abubakar, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Wike, who is a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, openly opposed the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, with other governors under the party known as PDP G5 governors.

As of the time of this report, the minister has not announced his defection from PDP.

But in a statement signed by the APC National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, the party said the campaign council was put together after the party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, consulted with the party’s National Working Committee.

“The National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, in consultation with the National Working Committee, has approved the composition of the Bayelsa State National Gubernatorial Campaign Council with the primary purpose of leading the gubernatorial campaign in Bayelsa state and ensuring the triumph of our great party at the November 11, 2023, governorship election,” the statement read.
