Peter Obi, a presidential candidate of the Labour Party, was the cynosure of all eyes as he stepped into the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, which was already abuzz with spectators cheering the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
ENigeria News reports that as soon as Peter Obi stepped into the stadium, the crowd went haywire and began singing and chanting Obi! Obi! Obi!. Not only was the stadium electrified with football fervor but also with the presence of the prominent presidential candidate, whose appearance at the stadium was rather surprising to many present.
Other visiting political figures present include the governor of Lagos, Babjide Sanwo-Olu; governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State; Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alhaji Shehu Dikko; Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade; and Chairman of the Nigerian Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, were all in attendance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Warriors of Zimbabwe.
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, the chief host, also graced the event, demonstrating his support for the national team. In a generous move to bolster attendance and morale, Governor Eno had earlier purchased all 30,000 tickets, offering them free to fans. This initiative aimed to mobilize robust support for the Super Eagles during this crucial qualifier.
The match itself saw Nigeria take the lead in the 74th minute through a goal by Victor Osimhen. However, the Super Eagles were denied victory when Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa equalized in the 90th minute, leaving the final score at 1-1.
Meanwhile, ENigeria News earlier reported that the result of the match on Tuesday poses serious challenges for Nigeria’s World Cup aspirations. With only one win in their last five matches, the Super Eagles’ path to qualification becomes increasingly precarious. Conversely, Zimbabwe will draw confidence from securing a point away from home.
