Political developments within the family of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar gathered pace on Monday as one son stepped down from public office while another prepares to seek elective position.
Adamu Atiku has resigned as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, bringing his tenure in Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s cabinet to a close after two terms in office.
His resignation, conveyed in a letter dated March 2, 2026, obtained by ENigeria Newspaper, and confirmed in a statement by his media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro. In the letter, Adamu expressed appreciation to Governor Fintiri for what he described as the privilege to serve in a strategic role, thanking him for the confidence reposed in him.
“It has been a rare honour and privilege to serve under your visionary leadership and to contribute, in my modest capacity, to the infrastructural growth and development of our dear state,” he wrote.
He pledged continued support for the administration’s developmental vision, stressing that his exit does not signal a withdrawal from public service but rather the opening of a new phase of engagement.
Adamu also commended the Permanent Secretaries of Works and Energy, as well as directors, engineers and staff of the ministry, for their professionalism and dedication to infrastructure development across Adamawa State. He extended gratitude to the people of Jada, his community, for their prayers and support, and acknowledged his father’s moral backing during his time in office.
“Special appreciation was conveyed to the great people of Jada, his community, for their steadfast prayers, encouragement, and unwavering support throughout his tenure,” the statement added.
His departure comes amid shifting political currents in the state. Adamu was absent at the Adamawa Government House last Thursday when Governor Fintiri defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a development that has intensified speculation about realignments ahead of future elections.
Although Adamu is believed to be nursing a governorship ambition, he has yet to formally declare the platform on which he intends to run. However, sources close to the former vice president indicated that Atiku has endorsed him for a senatorial contest.
Meanwhile, ENigeria Newspaper gather that Abba Atiku, another son of the former vice president, is set to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives on the platform of the APC.
Adamu Atiku is the first son of Atiku’s first wife, Titi Atiku, while Abba Atiku is the son of his second wife, Laadi Yakubu Atiku.
