The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ENigeria Newspaper has learnt.
INEC updated its records on the PDP’s official website, listing Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman, alongside other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) elected during a convention held on Sunday at the velodrome of Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The move comes amid a deepening split in the PDP, with rival factions led by Kabiru Turaki challenging the Wike-backed group in court. Despite legal attempts to halt the convention, the event proceeded and produced a full slate of national officers.
Addressing delegates at the convention, Wike hailed the outcome as a victory for party unity and grassroots democracy. “The PDP has overcome a protracted leadership crisis that once threatened its survival,” he said, adding that party members resisted forces promoting ethnic and regional divisions.
“The PDP has been returned to its rightful owners — the people.”
He also praised loyal supporters for sustaining the party during turbulent times, noting that despite what he described as “the infidelity of opportunistic elite,” the rank-and-file remained committed to the party’s ideals.
