The relegation battle between Spurs and West Ham is now being separated with just two points folllowing the share of points in Tottenham vs Leeds match.
Tottenham and Leeds tied 1-1 at home on Monday, with Mathys Tel playing both hero and villain roles. The outcome puts Tottenham’s Premier League future in jeopardy. At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Frenchman broke the impasse early in the second half to reduce tension, but he later handed up a penalty with a careless attempt at clearance.
With two games remaining in the season, Tottenham now leads 18th-place West Ham by two points.
Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi, who only arrived in late March, pledged his players would “fight until the end”.
“(When) we lost to Sunderland it was impossible to see ourselves two points above the relegation zone with two games to go. Now we have to be positive and work. We have the quality to make other points and stay up. I think we deserve to stay up. We will fight until the end.
“When you are fighting relegation you have to fight stronger with the legs than with the head. We have to push until the end. Even if we had won today, it wouldn’t have been finished yet:, he said.
Tottenham had only won two league games at home this season going into Monday’s game. It seems it was going to be a win long-awaited for when in the just five minutes into the second half, Tottenham broke the impasse as Tel immediately took control of the ball from Pedro Porro’s corner. Karl Darlow was diving when the Frenchman picked his place and curled the ball past him.
However, Tel attempted an overhead kick to clear the ball from his own penalty area with almost 20 minutes of regular time remaining, and he made contact with the head of the charging Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu.
After a VAR check and Dominic Calvert-Lewin blasted the ball home, referee Jarred Gillett declared it a penalty.
Are Tottenham safe?
After the Tottenham vs Leeds game, ENigeria Newspaper note that Spurs might be dealt a huge blow if they drop points against Chelsea in the weekend and if West Ham win against Newcastle.
