After defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves at Frost Bank Center, the San Antonio Spurs are just one victory away from the Western Conference finals.
Once again, Victor Wembanyama was the story, scoring 18 points in a pivotal first quarter after being dismissed in the series-tying Game 4 loss in Minneapolis. He shot 9-for-16 from the floor to finish with a game-high 27 points.
Wembanyama set the tone for the evening that the Spurs would control the game and the Wolves would need to fight back to have a chance since he had complete control of the floor in a way that only he can.
In the first quarter, he scored eighteen points and pulled down six rebounds. According to Stathead, that was just the third time a player has done that in the first quarter of a postseason game in the previous 30 years, after Nikola Jokić and LeBron James.
Despite down 12 at the half, the Timberwolves had their comebacks and tied the game early in the third quarter. Despite a hurt Anthony Edwards leading them with 20 points, Minnesota’s offense was inconsistent all night.
What is next for NBA Conference finals teams?
The Wolves and Spurs’ Western Conference series will resume on Friday at 9:30 p.m. ET in Minnesota
However, there would be only one game scheduled for Wednesday after two series have already concluded.
After both teams successfully guarded homecourt, the Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers’ second-round series is tied at two games apiece and will take place at 8 p.m. ET.
ENigeria Newspaper also noted that The Oklahoma City Thunder and New York Knicks have already made it to the conference finals in the West and East, respectively.
