Yusuf Buhari, son of former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari, has made his most significant move yet as he formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027 general elections after largely staying out of public and political discourse since the end of his father’s administration in 2023.

This announcement signals a shift in the younger Buhari’s transition from private life to active politics. His name has scarcely been mentioned in public discussions since his father left the ministry.

Yusuf wrote a letter on April 3, 2026, to say that he would compete for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua federal constituency in Katsina State as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I am extremely delighted to inform you of my intention to contest for this position, as I aim to contribute to good leadership and bring development to our people,” he stated.

The announcement was also confirmed by Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to the late president, who noted that the decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders.

“Following wide consultations, Yusuf Buhari, the son of our late boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, has informed stakeholders of his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua constituency under the All Progressives Congress,” Ahmad wrote.

Providing further insight into his ambition, Yusuf said, “With all respect, I am extremely delighted to write and inform you of my intention to contest for the seat of House of Representatives at the above-mentioned constituency (Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua), under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC).”

“After wide consultations, I wish to contest for the seat of the House of Representatives, Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua, as my contribution to ensure a good and qualitative leadership,” he added.

Appealing for support, he said, “Your support will help my ambition to succeed, to bring infrastructural development as well as human support and development to the people of this constituency.”

“While expecting your full support and encouragement, I wish you all the very best in all your undertakings.”

His declaration comes amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections and follows reports that stakeholders of the APC in Sandamu Local Government Area had earlier endorsed him as their preferred candidate.

Usman Na-Lado, the chairman of the council, described the endorsement as a collaborative resolution during a high-level meeting with elected officials and party leaders. He noted that Yusuf’s candidacy was based on his perceived ability and acceptance among stakeholders.

According to party sources, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda might support the action.
