The House of Representatives on Thursday advanced the proposed ₦2.2 trillion budget for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the 2026 fiscal year, giving the spending plan a second reading and setting the stage for further legislative scrutiny, ENigeria Newspaper has gathered.

The bill, which seeks approval for the withdrawal of ₦2,201,098,676,153 from the Statutory Revenue Fund of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), was sponsored by the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere. It is intended to finance the operations and development programmes of the FCT from January 1 to December 31, 2026.

ENigeria Newspaper also gathered that details of the proposal show that the largest share of the budget is earmarked for capital projects, underscoring the administration’s focus on infrastructure development across the territory. A total of ₦1,657,092,043,617 has been allocated for capital expenditure aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing service delivery within the nation’s capital.

Personnel costs account for ₦165,775,220,839 of the proposed budget, while ₦378,231,411,697 has been set aside for overhead expenses to support the day-to-day running of the FCT administration.

Lawmakers approved the bill for second reading after deliberations during plenary and subsequently referred it to the relevant House committee for further legislative action and detailed consideration.

Once passed and signed into law, the budget will provide the financial framework for the Federal Capital Territory Administration to implement key projects and programmes throughout the 2026 fiscal year.
