Nigerian skit maker and content creator, Abdulgaffaer Abiola, popularly known as Cute Abiola, has been facing criticisms after he uploaded a YouTube video of his wife delivering a baby through a caeserian section.
The couple’s journey from pre-surgery preparations to post-delivery recuperation is captured in the more than hour-long YouTube video, which was posted on Tuesday and seen by ENigeria Newspaper. Cute Abiola is seen outside the operating room, clearly sad, praying for his wife’s safety during one of the most poignant moments on April 4, the day of the surgery.
Particularly in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding social media arena, the development has further fueled discussions about digital boundaries, permission, and the increased demand on content creators to turn personal experiences into public information.]
While some netizens on X (formerly Twitter) slammed the comedian for using his wife’s tragic state to chase clout and make money off social media, some have defended him, stressing that it was only a documented moment that must have been consented to by the wife.
One user, identified as @Kabadiz described the practice as exploitative and questioned why such content should be supported, urging online communities to oppose the trend. He wrote, “I expect all the feminist on X to fight this guy not to release this video. How can he want to use her wife pain for content He has the audacity to even direct us to YouTube? Women are not protecting women.”
Another user, @Oluwatobig, criticised the move, saying it was troubling to see a partner’s vulnerable moment shared publicly for monetary gain. “I’m worried about what people like you do for money. You posted your wife’s vulnerable moment on YouTube for the world to see so you can make some money. What happened to making a different video to demonstrate what happened without sharing the vulnerable moments? Don’t you know that some things are meant to remain private?”, he wrote.
Similarly, @MrPM condemned the video, arguing that the creator should not entertain fans with the multiple surgeries sections that his wife has gone through.
“You are not serious. I should go to YouTube to watch ur wife do surgery for the 4th time in 3 years as if it’s an entertainment for her body to go through such stuff”, he wrote.
Meanwhile, a few commentators thanked the couple, understanding the struggles of pregnancy and childbirth. One user, @Mideypee, described the process as one that demands divine intervention, applauding the safe outcome. “Congratulations man. It’s not easy to be pregnant and born the baby and still being alive. It only take the grace of God for that to happen. Big big congrats”, he tweeted.
@Otunbaodibo reported witnessing his own wife experience a life-threatening birth process, expressing satisfaction that both mother and child survived after hours in the caesarian surgery.
“Same way I watched my wife on Saturday in the theater battling for her life. Thank God it was a success after 4 hours baby alive, mother alive father and siblings rejoicing.”
In a message, Cute Abiola praised ladies and acknowledged the fortitude he saw throughout the delivery.
He wrote, “And one more thing after everything I witnessed, after the strength, patience, and courage I saw. Never ask any woman what she brings to the table. Some women don’t just bring something to the table. They ARE the TABLE Thank you for the love. Link on my bio.”
