the widow of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, Omowunmi, and his father, Joseph Aloba, over a DNA test to determine the paternity of Mohbad’s son, Liam. The controversy has been ongoing since July when Aloba filed a lawsuit seeking a DNA test to confirm whether Liam is indeed his grandson.
The court had ordered both parties to undergo an Alternative Dispute Resolution, which ultimately failed to yield an agreement. Aloba’s lawyer had claimed that Omowunmi was not ready for the DNA test, but she has denied this allegation, stating that she is willing to undergo the test but Aloba is delaying the process.
In a letter dated January 16, 2025, Omowunmi’s lawyers accused Aloba of avoiding the DNA test and instead using social media to defame her son. The letter stated that Aloba had rejected Omowunmi’s choice of hospital for the DNA test and had also rejected her alternative suggestions.
Omowunmi threatened to conduct the DNA test independently if Aloba continued to delay the process. Her lawyers stated that they would inform the court of their decision and publish the results of the DNA test for the public to see.
In response, Aloba’s lawyers denied the allegations, stating that their client had not avoided the DNA test and had not defamed Omowunmi’s son on social media. However, they announced that they would no longer be representing Aloba in the matter.
The dispute has highlighted the ongoing tensions between Omowunmi and Aloba, who have been at odds over the paternity of Liam since Mohbad’s death. The case has sparked widespread interest and debate in Nigeria, with many calling for a resolution to the dispute.
