French football star Antoine Griezmann is reportedly set to leave Atletico Madrid this summer to join Major League Soccer club Orlando City, according to multiple reports.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner has been granted permission to travel to the United States to finalize the transfer, Goal.com quoted from The Athletic.
Griezmann’s move comes after weeks of speculation linking him to Orlando City. The French forward, 35, is eager to experience MLS, citing his admiration for American sports.
“I’ve always enjoyed following American sports. I go to NBA games when I can, and I think playing in MLS would be an exciting chapter in my career,” sources said.
Earlier, it was expected that Griezmann might depart Atletico Madrid at the end of February. However, the club’s run to the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad, scheduled for April 19, delayed his exit. The forward aims to leave on a high note by securing silverware with his current team before heading to North America.
Despite the MLS primary transfer window officially closing, Griezmann intends to complete the move once the European season concludes.
“If everything goes smoothly, he will transfer at the end of the season and bring a wealth of experience to Orlando City,” the report added.
Griezmann, Atletico Madrid’s all-time top scorer, boasts an impressive international record with 44 goals for France, a 2018 World Cup title, and runner-up finishes in the 2022 World Cup. He has also been named in La Liga’s ‘Team of the Season’ four times.
This season, the forward has scored six goals in La Liga and five in the Copa del Rey, marking a dip in form compared to previous campaigns. He recently featured for Athletico Madrid in their 3-2 loss to Real Madrid on Sunday. Nevertheless, his leadership and experience are expected to be vital assets for Orlando City.
Previously, Griezmann had also been linked to MLS sides LAFC, Chicago Fire, and briefly Inter Miami, highlighting his long-standing interest in the league. Should the transfer go through, Orlando City would secure one of the most accomplished footballers in MLS history.
