Manager of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, has described Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Arsenal as a major test, as both sides prepare for a high-stakes showdown at Wembley.

Guardiola said the clash presents a defining moment for his team, noting the significance of competing at the highest level against one of the most consistent sides this season.

“For the team it’s a big moment,” he said. “We have got to Wembley 22 times in 10 years, it’s an honour and a big challenge.”

The encounter brings together the top two teams in the Premier League, both still chasing multiple trophies, including the FA Cup, in what is expected to be a fiercely contested final.

Despite City’s impressive record in the competition, including a run of four consecutive titles between 2018 and 2021, Guardiola stressed that reaching the final alone should not be taken for granted.

“[When] we reach the final, no matter the competition, it’s always tough,” he said. “To be there we have to see it as a big opportunity because we never know when it will happen again.”

Looking ahead to the match, the City boss confirmed that James Trafford will start in goal, while also acknowledging the tactical strength of their opponents.

“They control many things and aspects of the game,” Guardiola said of Arsenal. “Fluidity in the build-up, they’re not a consistent pattern, more fluid.”

“They’re an exceptional team, it’s a big challenge for us to see our level.”

City will be aiming to secure a ninth League Cup title, while Arsenal seek to underline their strong campaign with silverware, setting the stage for a decisive contest between two of England’s best-performing teams this season.

Both teams are coming into the game with different results from the UEFA Champions League in the mid-week. While City were beaten by Real Madrid by an aggregate of 5-1, Arsenal advanced to the quarter-finals via a 3-1 aggregate win versus Bayern Leverkusen.
