Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher has backed Mohamed Salah as one of the greatest players in Premier League history, insisting the Liverpool forward’s legacy in the competition surpasses that of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carragher’s remarks follow confirmation that Salah will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season after agreeing to depart a year before the expiration of his contract. The pundit described the Egyptian’s exit as the close of an “extraordinary era” at Anfield.

Since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has been one of the most consistent performers in the league, recording 189 goals and 92 assists — more than any other player in that period. Carragher argued that such sustained output places him ahead of Ronaldo when evaluating impact strictly within the Premier League.

According to the former defender, only Thierry Henry ranks above Salah among overseas players in the competition’s history, noting that while several stars have dazzled in England, few have matched the Egyptian’s consistency over multiple seasons.

“In the pantheon of overseas attacking players to have excelled in England, only Thierry Henry eclipses Salah’s output and consistency,” Carragher wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

“While many will argue the merits of players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Bergkamp or Eric Cantona, none of them produced the same devastating numbers as consistently, season-after-season, as the Egyptian.

“Ronaldo’s time at Manchester United, both initially and upon his return, was either side of his absolute, Real Madrid-peak years. Salah edges ahead of him when judging strictly on Premier League performance and impact. In an all-time Premier League XI, Salah is an automatic inclusion in the front three alongside Henry and Ronaldo.”

Salah’s time at Liverpool has been marked by major honours, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup. He also played a central role in the club’s resurgence under Jurgen Klopp, forming a prolific attacking trio alongside Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Carragher went on to emphasize Salah’s resilience as a key characteristic, citing his exceptional availability over the course of nine seasons and his more than 400 club appearances. The forward’s determination to stay on the field continuously demonstrates the mindset of a top-tier player, he continued.

Mohammad Salah will depart Liverpool as one of the team’s top goal scorers, solidifying his status as one of its contemporary greats and leaving behind a legacy that, in Carragher’s opinion, is among the best the Premier League has ever witnessed.
