After months of drama at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa has returned as Speaker.
You would recall that lawmakers had impeached Obasa on multiple allegations among which was high handedness, abuse of office, lateness to plenary, intimidation among other issues raised on the floor of the house.
Obasa who was in far away United States of America on vacation while he was removed had countered his removal, stating that it was illegal, and cannot hold water.
His controversial removal by over 90 percent of the Assembly members (36 lawmakers), saw the appointment of Mojishola Meranda, deputy Speaker of the House at the time, making her the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. However, ever since the House has known no peace.
In a bid to resolve the leadership crisis, notable All Progressives Congress leaders, including former governors of Osun, Ogun, and Lagos states, Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, respectively, intervened on the directive of President Bola Tinubu.
After a reconciliation meeting with all lawmakers on Monday, Meranda tendered her resignation alongside other top principal executives.
“This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Meranda announced during the plenary.
Subsequently, Obasa was returned as the Speaker of the House during the ongoing plenary session held on Monday March 3rd, 2025.
