The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that a train operating on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor was involved in an incident on Monday morning near Asham, leaving several passengers injured but with no loss of life, ENigeria Newspaper confirmed.

Managing Director of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, said emergency procedures were immediately activated after the incident occurred, while injured passengers were evacuated and taken back to Abuja for medical attention.

According to him, “the train encountered an incident near Asham. No person died but the injured passengers had been brought back to Idu train station for necessary medical attention.”

Passengers on board described a moment of panic during the journey, saying they heard a loud bang before the train suddenly jolted, throwing some people off their seats and causing confusion inside the coaches.

Opeifa confirmed the development while addressing journalists, noting that the corporation had begun efforts to determine what led to the disruption.

“It is confirmed that our Abuja-Kaduna train had an incident at Asham. Passengers were injured while an investigation is ongoing into the exact cause of the incident,” he said.

Preliminary findings by the NRC indicated that the problem involved a rear locomotive and a passenger coach after a fault developed with the coupling mechanism, leading to contact between the two sections of the train.

Technical teams have since been deployed to the location, while the Safety Investigation Bureau is conducting a detailed probe to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the incident.
