Ogun governor Dapo Abiodun has recounted how he helped Ogun East senator Gbenga Daniel become a senator but is only getting of “negative media attacks” against him instead.
One week after being chosen as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 senatorial election, Abiodun gave a speech on Tuesday at the Ogun East All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ gathering.
During his speech at the stakeholders’ conference, Abiodun discussed his political relationship with Daniel and recalled “how he backed” his election to the Senate. According to the governor, he played a purposeful and important part in Daniel’s political ascent.
“I was here when Amosun became governor. I was here when Governor Daniel was governor. I actually ran against Governor Daniel then,” he said.
“But as soon as he emerged from the primaries, I was one of the first to congratulate him. I gave him all my structures. I delivered them to him and supported him.
“I know what I did for Governor Daniel to become a senator. I have never said this publicly, and I am saying it now. I know what my intervention was to get them to step down for him (Daniel) to emerge as senator. Segun Adesegun is here. Senator Mustapha, they are here. They were the frontrunners in that election.”
Abiodun also said he ensured Daniel’s reintegration into the party upon assuming office.
“I held his hand to ensure that he was integrated back into the party. These are facts. We entrusted it to him. If Governor Daniel now believes that the only way to repay me is by sponsoring negative media attacks against me, I leave him to his conscience”, he added.
The feud between Dapo Abiodun and Gbenga Daniel
Recall that ENigeria Newspaper noted that the tussle betweeen the sitting governor and former governor is on grounds of the ticket of the Ogun East Senatorial District. While the sitting governor has shown interest and has been given the ticket to run, the former governor plans to run on a second term, too.
Two weeks ago, Abiodun was backed during the APC caucus meeting of Ogun East leaders on April 20 in Ijebu-Ode, while Daniel, was excluded and disallowed to gain entry. Speaking to his supporters outside the meeting, the senator said that any decisions made there were “null and void.”
In a show of defiance, Daniel disregarded the agreement and bought the APC nomination form on Tuesday in order to run for reelection to the Senate.
