A panel made up of Senior Judge Vedia Berkut Barkin and Judge Gulay Uğur found Mr. Princewill guilty of all accusations and sentenced him to 14 years in jail at the Nicosia High Criminal Court.
According to the panel, Mr. Princewill’s punishment was increased due to recent legislative changes that required harsher sentencing due to the increase in sexual offenses in Cyprus.
Ms. Barkin further emphasized that the defendant’s case was aggravated by videotaping the victim without her consent, avoiding arrest, and displaying no remorse during the trial.
“The defendant came to our country as a student. After becoming an illegal immigrant, he continued to reside here and committed such a grave crime,” Ms Barkin said in her verdict.
ENigeria Newspaper can confirm that since the court verdict, public reactions that followed have been mixed, with many expressing support for the court’s decision, while others argued that the punishment should have been more severe given the nature of the crime.
