US President Donald Trump has released CCTV footages of the unidentified gunman suspect whom he thought might have come take his yesterday at the Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night in Washington DC.
The video, which was made public just before the president spoke to the media, purports to show the suspect sprinting inside the Washington Hilton’s ballroom while armed agents attempted to apprehend him by avoiding security metal detectors.
According to officials, the man who shot a Secret Service agent at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC, after breaking through a security checkpoint was carrying several knives and other weapons.
Following many gunshots outside the Washington Hilton Hotel ballroom, where around 2,500 people were present, Mr. Trump, First Lady Melania, and senior officials were swiftly escorted to safety from the annual event.
According to two law enforcement authorities who spoke with Sky News’ US partner network NBC, the suspect is a man from California who is in his early 30s. According to Jeffrey Carroll, the Metropolitan Police Department’s acting chief of police, the suspect got into a fight while attempting to enter the event, according to Jeffrey Carroll, the Metropolitan Police Department’s acting chief of police.
He has no criminal history, according to officials, and law enforcement was unaware of him. The suspect had several knives, a revolver, and a shotgun.
Mr. Carroll continued that an officer was hit by the suspect during a gunfight, but he was unscathed because he was wearing a bulletproof vest. Before being captured, he was “tackled to the ground” and placed in handcuffs.
Although the suspect’s motivation is unknown, authorities think he was acting alone, although he was a visitor to the Washington Hilton Hotel, the venue of the correspondents’ dinner.
President Trump on arrested suspect
During a press conference following the incident, President Trump stated that he might have been the objective of the alleged gunman. Mr. Trump claimed to have posted a picture of the purported gunman being captured on his Truth Social platform earlier.
The suspect, according to him, is a “lone wolf whack job” from California, and a “would-be-assassin”.
Following his departure from the White House in 2021 and throughout his reelection campaign, Trump has been a target of two murder attempts in 2024, and Saturday night was the first time Mr. Trump attended the correspondents’ dinner as president.
The most serious incident happened in July 2024 while Mr. Trump was campaigning at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania when a 20-year-old gunman shot and injured Mr. Trump in the upper ear before being dropped dead by security personnel shot.
ENigeria Newspaper also recalled that President Ronald Reagan was shot and injured by an assassion outside the Washington Hilton, the location of Saturday’s dinner, in 1981.
