President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to formalise a series of agreements with the United Kingdom today as part of his ongoing state visit aimed at deepening bilateral relations between both countries, ENigeria Newspaper has learnt.

Through a statement released by the Presidential Villa State House, one obtained by ENigeria Newspaper, the engagements are expected to culminate in the signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding covering areas such as trade, investment, defence and cultural cooperation, following high-level talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street.

One of the major highlights of the visit is the anticipated £746 million financing agreement involving UK Export Finance, the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Federal Ministry of Finance. The deal is targeted at upgrading key maritime facilities, including the Lagos Port Complex in Apapa and the Tin Can Island Port Complex.

As a guest of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, President Tinubu will be in the UK with First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The Nigerian leader will be hosted by the monarch at Windsor Castle, where both parties are anticipating to have private conversations and interact with organizations that promote interfaith understanding.

The visit, which has been called historic, is the first time a Nigerian leader has made a state visit to the UK in 37 years, and it is also the first time a Nigerian president has had such a reception at Windsor Castle.

The statement also noted that the President will attend an exhibition featuring Nigerian-related items from the Royal Collection, and the British Royal Family will give a state banquet in honor of the Nigerian delegation as part of the agenda. Tinubu is also anticipated to engage with business executives, Nigerian diaspora members, and creative industry stakeholders outside of formal gatherings, such as by going to an exhibition of Nigerian modernism.

The President’s delegation includes top government officials such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, Finance Minister Wale Edun, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and several other ministers and senior aides.

The goal of the visit is to deepen the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the UK as both nations want to increase their level of collaboration on the diplomatic, cultural, and economic fronts.

After the visit, President Tinubu is anticipated to return to Nigeria.
